I shared in a blog post earlier this week that I’ve been practicing intermittent fasting for about two months now, and I’m loving the way my body and my digestion feels from doing it.

But when you’re cutting back your eating window, it’s so important that the foods you eat during your eating window are really nutrient dense in macronutrients and micronutrients.

Lately I’ve been breaking my fast with this delicious, nutrient dense Banana Almond Butter Collagen Smoothie recipe, and it’s perfect for the first meal of the day. For me, that’s been around noon since I’ve been intermittent fasting.

Let’s talk about all the nutrition that’s in this yummy collagen smoothie recipe…

Vanilla Collagen Protein

Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins found in the body, but natural collagen production declines as we age. Collagen is also beneficial for skin, hair and nail support as well. A protein-packed beauty food? Yes please! I love the Primal Kitchen Collagen Fuel in vanilla coconut, which I order from Thrive Market and save almost $10 off regular retail price. Almond Butter

Almond butter is loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Itโ€™s high in monounsaturated fat, which are the same kind of healthy fats that are found in olives and avocados and are beneficial for your body in so many ways – satiety, heart health, gorgeous skin, metabolism, healthy hormones and so much more.

Frozen Banana

Bananas are loaded with fiber which helps to improve digestion, helps to moderate blood sugar levels and makes them a filling food. They’re also loaded with vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for the heart and kidneys. I always freeze very ripe bananas (don’t ever throw away a brown banana!) to use in my smoothies. Frozen bananas helps to give smoothies like this banana almond butter collagen smoothie a creamy, satisfying texture. Yum!

Medjool Dates

Medjool dates are rich in important minerals like magnesium and potassium and are an excellent source of fiber, which of course we know is beneficial for digestive health. Theyโ€™re also a great source of natural energy. Plus, they taste like caramel! I always pick up medjool dates from Trader Joe’s, they have a great price on theirs.

Cacao Nibs

Cacao nibs are made from crushed cocoa beans. Raw cacao is the purest form of chocolate and the one that allows you to reap the most benefits. Cacao is one of the foods in nature that is highest in magnesium, a mineral that many people are deficient in, and itโ€™s loaded with antioxidants which help to bring down inflammation in the body. Itโ€™s also a natural mood and energy booster and an inflammation reducer thanks to theobromine which is found in cacao, and it contains a compound called phenylethylamine which stimulates the brainโ€™s pleasure centers. This chemical naturally occurs in the body when we are in love and also when we achieve orgasm. A superfood indeed! I buy my cacao nibs from Thrive Market.

Maca Powder

Maca is an adaptogenic root that you eat in powder form, and it comes from a plant thatโ€™s native to Peru and Bolivia. Itโ€™s known to help balance hormones, and itโ€™s loaded with amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Because itโ€™s an adaptogenic food, maca may be able to help our bodies cope with stress, and many people also claim that it helps to boost both energy and sex drive (praise be!). Maca has somewhat of a malt-like flavor, which makes it perfect for smoothies. The maca in this smoothie is completely optional and it will still be delicious without it, but if you have some or want to try it, I highly recommend it. I buy my maca powder from Thrive Market.

Hypnogal – itโ€™s quite possible that not everyone has the same caloric intake/needs/goals as you do! Thank you for the feedback.
